Sounds Good: Valentine’s Day Edition

Valentine’s Day: It’s a day full of cheap chocolates and flowers, the typical “hallmark holiday,” a day where couples express their love for one another by showering each other in gifts. Some people dread it, while others bask in the love. Whether you’re head over heels for someone or bitter about love, there’s usually a song for that. Here are some love and “anti-love” songs that are perfect for the day.

Love Songs:

“Fix You” by Coldplay

Lead singer of Coldplay, Chris Martin, wrote this for his wife Gwyneth Paltrow when her dad died. The song is about how he would do anything to fix the things that hurt her, making this a display of love perfect for any couple on Valentine’s Day.

“Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars

The song is about how amazing a girlfriend can be. What girl wouldn’t want their boyfriend to sing this to them on Valentine’s Day?  The sheer cuteness and cheesiness of this song is enough to make any girl swoon.

“Anyone Else But You” by The Moldy Peaches

This song was made famous by Ellen Page and Michael Cera’s rendition in Juno, making it already perfect. But if you really listen to the lyrics, it shows how much a couple loves one another and how they are best friends- which is how all couples should be.

“All You Need Is Love” by The Beatles

This song doesn’t cover just romantic love. It’s about giving and receiving love from anyone. People think that because they’re single on Valentine’s Day they have to mope around. But, there are other options. Go out and spend time with people you love, whether it be a group of friends or family. Valentine’s Day doesn’t necessarily have to be just about couples.

“Anti-Love” Songs

“Picture To Burn” by Taylor Swift

This song is the epitome of a jilted lover, with Swift repeatedly making insults about her “red neck heartbreak” of an ex-boyfriend. Taylor’s famous for bashing her ex-boyfriends through song. For example, the song “Dear John” is clearly about her failed relationship with John Mayer. So girls, if a guy with “a stupid old pickup truck” ever hurts you, you should be listening to this on Valentine’s Day.

“You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette

Never make this lady mad, she will write a song about it, and be extremely harsh. This song is for anyone who got cheated on, and wants to let that loser know just how much he screwed up.

Best Lyrics: “And every time you speak her name, does she know how you told me you’d hold me until you died, till you died. But you’re still alive.” These are the best lyrics because you can really hear the anger and hurt in her voice, perhaps it’s something you can relate to.

“Gold Digger” by Kanye West and Jamie Foxx

Don’t worry guys, I didn’t forget about you. This song depicts how a man marries a woman who takes all his money. Another good song with a similar theme is “Fuck You” by Cee-Lo. So boys, if you’re sick of that girl having her hand in your wallet, blast these songs on Valentine’s Day.

“My Friends Over You” by New Found Glory

This song shows that spending time with friends is much better than having to deal with a person who is going to keep hurting you.  This is the perfect song to play on Valentine’s Day if you’re out with a bunch of your single friends and you’re tired of having to deal with a certain someone and all their bullshit.
